The Gerontological Nursing Honors Program (GNHP) is designed for outstanding undergraduate nursing students to receive focused education, mentorship and credits related to working with older adults. This unique honors program helps undergraduate students to better understand the needs of the aging population and to take the next step in their education with an in-depth focus in gerontological nursing.

ELIGIBILITY: All students statewide who are accepted into one of the following OHSU School of Nursing undergraduate programs: RN-BS; 3 year BS in Nursing; and the Accelerated BS, and who have at least 5 quarters remaining in their programs of study; are eligible to apply.

Students must maintain good academic standing, complete all program requirements, and maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 to remain in the program. Student conduct issues, should they arise, may make a student ineligible to continue in the program. Students must be continuously enrolled in the undergraduate program to qualify for the GNHP.

Students accepted into the GNHP must demonstrate a strong commitment to care of the older adult, a population that is rapidly increasing worldwide. Participating in the GNHP requires an additional time commitment beyond that required in the already-rigorous nursing program. Students applying for the program should be prepared to meet the additional intellectual and personal demands of the program.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Eligible students (see eligibility requirements above) are invited to apply and must submit this application by June 17, 2016 by 5:00 p.m. Students cannot be considered for this award without submitting this completed application form, a letter of support, unofficial transcripts, and the required essay. Admission to the GNHP will be determined by the information provided in this application including factors related to academic merit, interest in and commitment to gerontological nursing, and the candidate’s background. Space is limited in the GHNP and admission is competitively based on application criteria.

SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT: Up to $1000 is available in scholarship assistance in the final 3 terms of the program. The scholarship assists with payment for the additional credits required as part of the honors curriculum.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: June 17, 2016 by 5:00 p.m.
