The Phyllis J. Michaelson Scholarship Fund in Gerontological Nursing, established in 1996 by Jerry Michaelson, was created to support students enrolled in graduate nursing programs of the School of Nursing at Oregon Health & Science University with a gerontological nursing specialty.

Program Specifics

The Hartford Center of Gerontological Excellence (HCGE) at OHSU seeks applicants for the Michaelson Gerontological Nursing Scholarship. The goal of the scholarship is to prepare advanced practice nurses and educators with the knowledge needed to address the complex health care needs of older adults.

This scholarship provides support for students in the second year of the MNE or Adult Gerontological Nursing program at the OHSU SoN who are committed to improving the health and health care of older adults. Up to $3000 will be awarded to accepted students for the 2020-21 academic year during Fall, Winter, and Spring terms.

Applicants must submit two letters: 1) a letter of intent (LOI) confirming a commitment to teach others about the health and health care needs of older adults and 2) a letter of support (LOS) from a program director, advisor, or faculty member confirming an interest in the health and health care needs of older adults, and his/her appraisal of the applicant’s strengths and limitations.

Award funds can only be used for qualified tuition and fees for the year that awards are granted. Scholarship funds will be distributed in accordance with the University policies regarding scholarship funding.

Scholar Selection Criteria/Requirements

1. Scholar is a permanent resident of the United States or its territories at the time they will receive the scholarship.

2. Scholar is committed to a career with plans to focus on the care of older adults.

3. Scholar must plan to be enrolled in the second year of the MNE or Adult Gerontological Nursing program at OHSU SoN during AY 2020-21.

4. Scholar may be enrolled full or part time.

5. Scholar must demonstrate high academic performance, with a GPA of 3.0 or above and remain in good academic standing.

6. Scholar must demonstrate financial need.
